Fossil Ammonite on rock base

An image of Fossil Ammonite on rock base

Each of these 175 million year old fossil ammonites are unique. The ammonite is known as a dactylioceras and comes from Whitby, North Yorkshire.

The grey shale rock that surrounds the fossil has been carefully removed to expose these fascinating, extinct group of creatures that roamed the oceans during the Jurassic period.

Folklore has it that these creatures from Whitby were once the coiled remains of snakes. Before people realised what a fossil represents ammonites were often called snakestones.

Each one is slightly different because they are unique. The diameter of the actual ammonite fossil ranges from 4 to 5 cms. The surround rock could be up to 8 cms.
